The winter season has arrived and now is the time to get you and your car equipped. In this blog post we talk about why winter tires are important, how it could keep you safe and how it can save you money.
As an insurance brokerage, we always stress to our clients the importance of insurance, especially with your car. One can never know when an accident can happen; and in the winter the chances are even higher. In Canada, it’s hard to argue that winter tires are a must have for your car. So why are winter tires important? The tires themselves are made from a different rubber compound than regular tires, which has a better grip in cold weather. This is especially important because when the roads get icy, it’s harder for your car to get a good grip on the road.
Did You Know? Having four winter tires on your vehicle reduces your braking distance by up to 25% or between 2 and 3 car-lengths? That could save your car from a fender-bender that can simply be avoided by stopping in to get winter tires put on. Something you may or may not have known about winter tires, is that in the province of Ontario, your insurance company is required to offer you a discount on winter tires! The discount will differ from company to company, up to and usually 5 per cent of the cost of the policy. No matter what city you’re driving to and from and no matter how clear you think the roads are, the tires practically pay for themselves the moment you start to lose control of your car.
What’s a good way to identify good winter tires? According to Transport Canada, “Tires marked with a pictograph of a peaked mountain with a snowflake, meet the specific snow traction performance requirements and are designed for use in severe snow conditions”. Always make sure that you look out for these indicators to make sure you are getting the proper tires put onto your car.
Most drivers who have switched to winter tires for the season will attest to the safety and liberty it has given them on the road during the winter months.
