However, a social media post can only fit so many characters, which is why we wanted to dedicated a blog this week just to the #BedrockTips we give to you! Some of the tips we post, as simple as they seem, can make a big difference to your home, your lifestyle and your valuables. In this blog, we expand on some of our most popular #BedrockTipWednesdays

Impaired Driving

Impaired driving is quickly becoming one of the most common causes of injury and death on the road. Many people think that having just a drink or two surely won’t impair them enough to not drive; however, this is specifically the mindset that can get them and others seriously injured. It’s no question that over the years, we have seen our fair share of impaired driving commercials, ads and campaigns against it, and for good reason. Drinking and driving is one of the tops causes of deaths in teenagers and the numbers are decreasing. In Ontario, they have enacted some strict rules on impaired driving that include:
• Losing your license
• Having your vehicle impounded
• Paying a heavy fine upon conviction
• Jail time and a criminal record
Ontario, as well as the rest of Canada, are making strict efforts to combat impaired driving. If you are planning on drinking, make sure you either nominate a designated driver amongst your group of friends, so there’s a clear plan of who is taking everyone home, or make sure to call a taxi or Uber so you can safely get home. When you get behind the wheel while impaired, you have to understand that you are putting someone as well as yourself in danger. So, enjoy responsibly!

Home Security

Your home is one of your most valuable assets, so protecting it is a huge priority – and we get it! That’s why we wanted to make home security another important Bedrock tip. One of the simplest tips to protecting your home is to lock your doors. By leaving your door open, even in a seemingly safe neighbourhood, it gives intruders an open invite to your home. Another simple tip for keeping your home secure would be to leave a light on either inside or outside your home when leaving for a period of time. This is a smart way to prevent home intrusions, since the lights expose them to neighbours or others on the street. If you are going away for an extended period of time, it is sometimes a good idea to have a neighbour, friend or family member check on your house to make sure to do any upkeep with pets, plants or making sure your house in order. Having that support can majorly put your mind at ease. If you don’t have a security system set up in your home, these are some great ways to be your own security watch!

Travel Insurance

Travelling is quite the exciting time. Beach vacation? Yearly family get together? Or Maybe you’re backpacking across Asia. Either way, travelling and exploring different parts of the world, is something we all look forward to doing, but having travel insurance is super vital to your upcoming trip and we’ll explain why. In the case that you needed medical attention for whatever reason, travel insurance will take care of the medical expenses for you. If you didn’t obtain travel insurance and did need to receive medical attention or treatment, you would be liable to pay for all the costs out of your pocket, which can get extremely expensive.
Aside from the medical aspect that travel insurance covers, it also helps if there is a disruption. When it comes to travelling, some things just can’t be controlled. Whether your flight is delayed, cancelled or you need to return home from an emergency, having travel insurance can really be a mind-easer in these cases. If in the case of a disruption in your travels, you can end up costing you a lot of money. With many travel insurance packages, they will cover you for travel disruptions. This really helps for the fact that you won’t have to spend money in the case that something goes wrong. So, before you travel, get insured, then have fun!

Wearing Seat belts

For the driver, wearing a seat belt should be one of the first things they do when getting into the car. But what about the passengers? Maybe it might’ve slipped your mind once or twice, or maybe you feel that it is uncomfortable to wear, but that little mechanism can majorly save your life. In the case of an accident, it is reported that five lives are saved for every one percent increase in seat belt usage. A simple click of a seat belt can prevent you from being ejected out of a car in the case of an accident. This means that most lives are saved, because the passenger and/or driver was wearing a seat belt. Not only are you putting yourself at risk, it is also a legal requirement in Canada for all drivers and passengers to wear a seat belt. In the case of insurance, most people wearing seat belts, means fewer serious injuries and lower claim costs for insurance providers. Avoid hazard and wear your seatbelt!
